Are You Running Towards Progress or Injury?
You train. You push. You aim to improve.
But have you ever had your running technique professionally assessed?
Most runners haven’t—and that’s often why problems show up later. Shin splints. Knee pain. Plantar fasciitis. Injuries that don’t come out of nowhere. They build slowly, from small issues in your movement you may not even feel—until it’s too late.
A Professional Gait Analysis Could Change Everything
At ProMOTION Physiotherapy in Edinburgh, we carry out detailed, expert-led Gait Analysis to help runners avoid injury and run better for longer.
- We give you clear, expert feedback tailored to your body and your goals
- We use slow-motion video to analyse your running gait
- We assess your movement on a treadmill from multiple angles
- We identify subtle imbalances or inefficiencies

Experienced Edinburgh Running Physios
When Lisa and Owen set up ProMOTION Physiotherapy in 2017 it was always their aim to provide an excellent service to runners in Edinburgh. Whether they are elite runners competing competitively or recreational runners who are working towards their own personal running goals. As keen runners they know the importance of being able to run regularly on a persons’ physical and mental health and the negative impact sustaining a running injury can have on this.

They have completed specialist running courses taught by leading Physiotherapists in the field, including Tom Goom, Rich Willy and Benoy Matthews, to improve their running analytical skills and rehabilitation skills.

Do I Need A Gait Analysis?
Most runners only seek help after something goes wrong.
But the truth is:
If you’re running regularly and haven’t had an assessment, you’re making assumptions about your form, technique, and injury risk.
Are you sure your running style isn’t holding you back—or worse, leading you toward injury?
Can I Have a Gait Analysis if I’m Injured?
As Physiotherapists, we will always listen and talk to you about your problem before deciding if we need to carry out gait analysis on our treadmill. If you have an injury that is impacting on your running there are a lot of things that we can assess in the first instance before getting you on a treadmill.
Your injury may be stopping you from running even a few steps and if this is the case then putting you on a treadmill to run would not be advisable in the first instance. If, however, you can run for a short period of time without exacerbating your pain then analysing your running gait can provide us with really useful information to help you return to your full running potential.
How Do You Carry Out a Gait Analysis?
Our team is trained in how to analyse a patient when running. We perform this analysis in our rehabilitation space where we have a treadmill and capacity to record the runner from various angles. Often, we can spot some simple issues that can be resolved with simple interventions. Mostly, however, there are some subtleties involved that can contribute to your running problem/ pain that we can only see in slow-motion or when moving the video frame by frame. Therefore by filming you running on a treadmill we can take time to analyse the video and give you feedback.

What Should I Wear To My Gait Analysis?
It is important that you come to your appointment prepared. Please bring the trainers that you would normally run in and either shorts or running leggings.
What Happens After My Gait Analysis?
Following your Gait Analysis, we will give you expert advice on precisely the areas you need to target to run faster and stronger, and to remain injury-free, such as:
- Advice on possible alterations to your running gait such as changes to your running cadence, running posture, vertical oscillation and foot strike.
- In depth advice on your training plan
- A bespoke Strength and Conditioning Program
If you have an injury we will be able to explain to you our diagnosis of your injury and work on an appropriate rehabilitation plan with you. Please see our page on running injuries for more information.
