Here at ProMotion Physiotherapy, we treat a wide range of injuries, helping our patients recover and return to their daily activities or sports with confidence. While every injury is unique to each individual, certain conditions tend to occur more frequently than others. Understanding these common conditions and injuries can help you recognize symptoms early and seek the appropriate treatment in a timely manner. Here are the top five most common injuries we see at our clinic and some tips on how to prevent them.
- Lower Back Pain Lower back pain is one of the most common complaints among our patients. It can result from poor posture, heavy lifting, sudden movements, or prolonged sitting. Many people experience lower back pain due to muscle strain or disc issues.
Prevention Tips:
- Avoid sitting or standing for long periods. Try to move frequently whenever possible.
- Engage in regular core strengthening exercises to support your lower back. Pilates is useful to help recovery and maintain good strength.
- Ensure to use proper lifting techniques, keeping the load close to your body and lifting with your legs, not your back.

2. Shoulder Injuries Shoulder injuries, including rotator cuff tears, muscular impingement, dislocations and age related changes, are prevalent, especially among athletes and individuals who engage in repetitive overhead activities. These injuries often result from overuse, improper technique, or accidents.
Prevention Tips:
- Warm up thoroughly before engaging in activities that involve shoulder movements.
- Maintain strength and flexibility of the muscles around the shoulder joint.
- Avoid repetitive overhead movements that can strain the shoulder, whenever possible.

3. Knee Pain Knee pain can arise from various conditions, such as patellofemoral pain syndrome, meniscus tears, or ligament injuries. It’s common in athletes, especially those involved in running, jumping, or pivoting sports. Osteoarthritis or ‘wear and tear’ is also common and is prevalent in many individuals.
Prevention Tips:
- Wear proper footwear that provides adequate support for your activities.
- Strengthen the muscles around the knee, including the quadriceps, hamstrings and gluteal muscles.
- Avoid sudden changes in the intensity of your exercise routine.

4. Ankle Sprains Ankle sprains occur when the ligaments around the ankle are stretched or torn, often due to a sudden twist or roll. This injury is common in sports that involve running, jumping, or quick changes in direction, in addition to unexpected twists or falls to individuals of any age.
Prevention Tips:
- Perform regular exercises to strengthen the muscles around the ankle and improve balance.
- Use supportive footwear, especially during physical activities.
- Be mindful of uneven surfaces and take care when walking or running on them, especially when changing direction.

5. Tennis Elbow (Lateral Epicondylitis) Tennis elbow is a common overuse injury that affects the tendons on the outside of the elbow. Despite its name, it can occur from any repetitive arm, wrist or hand gripping type movement, not just from playing tennis.
Prevention Tips:
- Gradually increase the intensity of activities that involve repetitive arm movements.
- Take regular breaks if participating in repetitive sports or activities, to rest the muscles and tendons in your forearm.
- Use proper technique and equipment when engaging in activities like racquet sports, DIY or lifting.
