Start to think about what type of exercise you want to do to get fit in 2024 and make some fitness goals (10000 steps walking daily, a 5km jog three times a week, Cramond Park Run, a marathon, an ultra-marathon, Glasgow to Edinburgh cycle).
What is your Everest?
Think about what type of exercise you would enjoy, this might be key to sustaining a fitness programme beyond January.
The first few weeks can be hard but you will get through it because you have committed short term and you are motivated.
Traditionally as Physiotherapists we see a lot of newly injured patients at the start of February – mainly from overloading their muscles and joints in January.
So we think its important to take a few weeks to prepare your body for what you plan to do in the weeks ahead.
Maybe you plan to start jogging / running– maybe you fancy doing the Couch To 5K, great idea. There are some key simple exercises that you can start to do NOW to protect the muscles and joints that you are going to work.
Perhaps you fancy the exercise classes you see in the park – so you may need to focus on some simple, key core exercises as well as upper and lower body strengthening to help you prepare.
